The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) is an important exam that all students in Kenya must take to transition from secondary school to higher education, such as colleges or universities. Thus, for students at the Form Four level, understanding when the KCSE exams start and end is essential to passing your exams, as you are able to set time aside for thorough preparation. So, if you are probably wondering when the KNEC KCSE exams will start in 2026, the good news is that the Ministry of Education has already confirmed the official KCSE exam dates through the 2026 academic calendar.
The 2026 academic year is also a groundbreaking year, as the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) introduced mid-year exams in 2025 for KCSE students who failed their exams and wish to retake them. If you are looking to resit your Secondary Education National Exams in 2026 (for those who sat their exams in 2025), here is a quick guide with more information. Below, you can find all the information that you need to understand about the KCSE Exams in 2026.
How To Register for KCSE 2026 Exams
If you are a KCSE candidate in 2026, before you sit for the exams scheduled to start in November, you must ensure you are registered with the Kenya National Examinations Council. According to official information from KNEC, the registration process for this year’s examination began on 16 February 2026 and will end on 31 March 2026.
Students do not complete the registration process themselves; instead, the heads of various institutions are responsible for ensuring that all candidates are registered and that the process is strictly done online via the KNEC registration portal.
The following are the Key Registration Requirements:
Valid National ID card or Birth Certificate (for those without ID)
Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) certificate
KCSE result slip/certificate (for repeaters)
A soft copy of a recent passport-size photo (300×300 pixels) with a plain, light background
How Much Is the KCSE Registration Fee?
Registering for the KCSE Exams requires payment to complete your application. However, first-time KCSE candidates enjoy free registration, as the Kenyan government covers all registration costs for students sitting the exams for the first time. Private candidates and those repeating the KCSE examination must pay a registration fee of KSh 7,200. If you are a private candidate, you must register through the Sub-County Directors of Education (SCDE) offices and submit all required documents, including proof of payment, before the 31 March 2026 deadline.
After the registration phase, the KCSE examinations will occur from Monday, 2 November to Friday, 20 November 2026. However, the project component of the examinations starts in January and runs for 7 months until July. Schools must upload marks for subjects with a project component by the following official KNEC deadlines: Milestone 1 — 31 March 2026 and Milestone 2 — 31 July 2026.
The rehearsal for the examinations will be held on Friday, 16 October 2026, the Friday before oral and practical exams begin. Below is the complete 2026 KCSE exam schedule, including when specific papers will be held and at what time of day.

2026 KCSE Exam Instructions & Guidelines
If you are a KCSE candidate in 2026, KNEC has strict guidelines that all students an Teachers must follow when taking their exams. So, before the official KCSE exam days arrive, you may want to familiarize yourself with these rules to avoid penalties or disqualification. They are as follows:
General Instructions
All first-session examination papers will start at 8.00 a.m., and second-session examination papers will start at 2.00 pm, as indicated on the timetable.
The time allowed for each paper is indicated against the name of the paper, and NO EXTRA TIME IS TO BE ALLOWED. In case of any discrepancy, the time stated on the question paper should be taken as correct. Time for reading through the questions is included in the time shown on the question paper, except where special paper instructions indicate otherwise.
Schools should upload marks for subjects with a Project component by 31st March 2026 for Milestone 1 and 31st July 2026 for Milestone 2, where applicable.
Instructions To Teachers
Teachers are advised to ensure that the candidates read these instructions and guidelines carefully and adhere to them. The candidates should be made aware of the penalties for examination irregularities or misconduct.
Instructions To Candidates
Avail yourself for searching outside the examination room and be seated at your desk/table 15 minutes before the time fixed for the examination in the various papers. The first session will start at 8.00 AM followed by the second session at 2.00 pm as indicated on the timetable.
A candidate who arrives late will be required to give a satisfactory reason to the Supervisor. Only in exceptional circumstances will a paper be given to any candidate who is more than half an hour late. Absolute punctuality is essential for all papers.
Check the question paper you have been given to confirm that it is the paper you registered for.
If the questions indicate that a map or other material should have been provided, and they are not, inform the Supervisor at once.
Attend carefully to any general instructions that may be given on the first page of a paper, e.g., instructions limiting the number of questions that should be answered.
Check to ensure that each page of your question paper is printed. Ensure that your name and index number have been written correctly on the Question Paper/answer script, sign and write the date of the examination on the answer booklet.
Write on both sides of the paper, but do not use the margins. Begin the answer to each separate part of a question on a fresh line.
Write the number of the question clearly in the left-hand margin at the beginning of each answer. Do not copy the question. Be careful to use the same numbering system as appears in the question paper. Leave a blank line after the answer to each question.
Write your responses in black or blue ink. You may use a fountain pen or a ballpoint pen, but not erasable pens. A pencil should only be used for diagrams. Bring mathematical and drawing instruments for subjects for which they will be needed.
Read each question carefully. A lot of time may be wasted writing information that is not requested, and no marks will be given for it.
Do not spend too much time on one or two questions. Leave yourself adequate time to answer other questions.
As soon as notice is given to stop, make sure your name, index number, signature, and the date of the examination are written on the answer booklet, and then hand it over to the supervisor/invigilator.
Caution To Candidates
You are not allowed to leave the examination room before the end of the allocated period for the paper, except with the Supervisor’s special permission. No candidate permitted to leave may take a question paper or answer booklet out of the examination room.
Do not leave a sheet of paper you have written on or your answers in such a position that another candidate can read them. You should not give or obtain unfair assistance, or attempt to do so, whether by copying or in any other way, and your work should not show proof of such unfair assistance.
No communication whatsoever, in any manner, is permitted between candidates or with outsiders during the examination.
You are not allowed to have in your possession or in your proximity while in the examination room, any book, notes, papers, or any other materials whatsoever except the correct question papers and any materials expressly authorized by the Kenya National Examinations Council.
You may only use Mathematical tables printed by the Kenya National Examinations Council, and these should not contain any additional notes except the printed information. If you are using a calculator as permitted by the Regulations, it should be the specified non-programmable calculator and should not have a cover. If in doubt, consult with the Supervisor. Calculators may be used in the following subjects: Mathematics, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Geography, Agriculture, Woodwork, Metalwork, Building Construction, Power Mechanics, Electricity, Drawing & Design, Aviation Technology, Computer Studies, and Business Studies.
You must return to the Supervisor any question paper that has smudges, errors, or is badly printed immediately.
You must not take any used or unused paper out of the examination room. Any rough work must be done on the official answer booklet and, if not to be submitted with the answers, must be left on the desk for collection by the Supervisor and destruction.
Any misconduct or causing of disturbance in or near the examination room will be treated as an examination irregularity.
For practical papers to be taken in shifts, all candidates taking the examination must avail themselves for confinement. Any candidate who does not present him/herself for confinement will have committed an examination irregularity.
Cell phones or any other electronic communication devices are prohibited in examination centres. Any candidate found in possession of a cell phone or any other electronic communication device will have his or her results cancelled.
In case you notice any suspected cases of examination malpractice, please bring the same to the attention of KNEC through your Principal, teachers, or any other means that are within your reach.
Guidelines To Centre Managers, Supervisors & Invigilators
The Centre Managers should ensure that the supervisors and invigilators deployed to their centres have not served in the same centre for three consecutive years.
A supervisor is deployed for every two hundred (200) candidates, and for every examination room, a maximum of 20 candidates must have an invigilator.
There should be at least two security officers in each examination centre. When the number of candidates exceeds 250, the centre may request one additional security officer.
During the optional papers, candidates should be grouped in one or more examination rooms. They will move their desks and return to their rooms during the compulsory papers. Some invigilators will be absent on the days of the optional papers, and only the required number should be present. The supervisor should rotate them accordingly.
Only authorized persons shall be allowed into the examination centre during exams, as stipulated by KNEC.
Supervisors and Invigilators should ensure that candidates are issued with personalized Question papers that bear their names and a random number, in addition to other features that will be described and communicated during the examination period.
Supervisors must verify that candidates have signed their answer scripts and script control form before collecting them for packing. They must count the candidates’ scripts to ensure they tally with the present candidates.
Absentee candidates must be indicated as AB in Red against their index number on the script control form and on the return cover page.
The KCSE seating plan and Script Control Forms MUST NOT BE STAMPED by the centre manager, nor are any details of the school indicated on them. Every return polybag must have a script control form.
The centre managers and the supervisors MUST ensure the correct return envelope and cover page are used. Candidates’ answer scripts should not be over-stuffed into a single return envelope; they should be distributed evenly across the return envelopes and cover pages provided for each paper.
Penalty For Examination Irregularities
The KNEC Act No. 29 of 2012, Offences and Penalties, as stated in Sections 27 to 40, will apply to cases of examination irregularities. Some of the highlights in these Sections state that:
A candidate who commits an examination irregularity in any paper will have the results for the whole subject cancelled. Such a candidate will not be entitled to a result and will be awarded result “Y” overall.
If there is evidence of widespread irregularities in any examination centre, the examination results for the whole centre will be cancelled.
Any person who:
