As we know, the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations were phased out, with the introduction of the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) as a replacement under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) framework for Grade 6 learners. Unlike the KCPE exams, which focused on evaluating the overall knowledge of the learners, the KPSEA evaluates learners in several subjects, including Mathematics, English, Integrated Science, Kiswahili/Sign Language, and Creative Arts & Social Studies, ensuring that they have not just the needed knowledge but as well as the skills in those various subjects before transitioning to the next phase of their studies in Junior High school.
But among all these, one thing that remains particularly important for the learners to understand is that at the end of the year, they must sit for the examinations, which not only helps them to transition to the next level but also provides valuable feedback to educators and policymakers on areas needing improvement in the curriculum implementation. As I write this article, the Kenya National Examinations Council has already released the KPSEA examination timetable, which provides a clear roadmap for when these examinations will start and end.
In this guide, we have compiled everything Grade 6 learners, parents, and school administrators need to know โ from the official 2026 KPSEA timetable and registration deadlines to the key instructions every candidate must follow on examination day.
What is the KPSEA Examination?
By now, it is clear from my introduction above what the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) is. However, for those who might not be aware, these are examinations that Grade 6 learners take under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), which focuses on assessing learnersโ competencies rather than their knowledge retention. The KPSEA exams contribute only 40% of the final score, with the remaining 60% coming from classroom-based continuous assessments conducted in Grades 4, 5, and 6. This approach ensures a more comprehensive evaluation of studentsโ abilities and reduces the pressure traditionally associated with single high-stakes examinations.
2026 KPSEA Registration Dates
Before the examination, all Grade 6 candidates must be officially registered through their schools. The Kenya National Examinations Council has announced that the registration window for the 2026 KPSEA (and KILEA) is open from February 16 to March 16, 2026. Schools are required to submit candidate registration details and the applicable fees within this period. Late registration or incorrect registration of candidates may lead to administrative complications, so school heads and teachers are advised to act promptly to ensure that all eligible learners are captured in the KNEC system before the deadline.
When Will the 2026 KPSEA Take Place?
